The annual Student Technology Competition Showcase was held on Thursday, April 19 in conjunction with the Petersheim Academic Exposition. Sponsored by the Teaching, Learning and Technology Roundtable, this annual event invites undergraduate and graduate students to submit technology projects that were created for a course assignment. This year, prizes were awarded based on the technical quality and educational merit of the projects in the following three categories: Creative Writing and Imagery, Digital Images and Multimedia.

Josefine S Pena – Winner

Reflection of first semester experiences. Different assignments involve the transition from high school to college, involvement in campus activities, growth and development academically, socially and emotionally.
William P DeCotiis and Rezina Brutus-Foulkes – Honorable Mention
Project: Challenge-based Learning for BMIE1001AA (Real World Technology), Dr. Joseph J. Martinelli (faculty)
Assignment:
Explore features and functions of PowerPoint by creating a poster.
This poster is one slide in PowerPoint.
The Digital Images (examples are: photography, graphic design, illustration) category
Christopher O Stefanski – Winner
Project: Poster Series for EDST6304SA (Production I – Visual Communication Design), Dr. Joseph Martinelli (faculty)
Assignment:
Create a poster series that relates to an area of study or employment. As an Instructional Design student, Chris wanted to make a poster series about Internet/Technology pet peeves. He created 3 posters in a similar style, layout, and theme that focused on situations to avoid (overuse of cap lock and sarcasm, improper typing).
The Multimedia (combining images and audio) category
Project: A Visual Exploration of Iterative Dynamic Systems through the Mandelbrot and Julia Sets for Math4512AA (Intro to Complex Analysis), Dr. Bert Wachsmuth (faculty) by Joseph O’Connor and Jonathan Arena.
Assignment:
Illustrate what happens when you apply the function f(z)=z^2+c to itself over and over again for different values of c.
Joseph O’Connor – Winner
To create the “Julia sets movie”, Joe used custom software Dr. Bert Wachsmuth wrote to create thousands of images, each being slightly different from the previous one, depending on some variation of a parameter in a math function. He then used the free, open source program “Avidemux” <http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/> to turn these images into movies, much like in an animated movie. The individual movies were then spliced together and video added with, Windows Moviemaker, <http://windows.microsoft.com/is-IS/windows-live/movie-maker-get-started>.

Jonathan Arena – Honorable Mention
To create the “Mandelbrot” movie, the process was similar to that used by Joseph O’Connor, but Jonathan used the program “Ultra Fractal” < http://www.ultrafractal.com/ > to generate the individual images, which were collected into a movie. Windows Movie Maker was used to create the final version with the audio track.

Meara L Jones – Honorable mention
Project: NJ HIB: Teacher’s Workshop for EDST7312WB (Curriculum Issues – Schools and Society), Dr. Rosemary Skeele (faculty)
Assignment:
Create a slide presentation for a professional development workshop for teachers, focusing on New Jersey Laws regarding harassment, intimidation and bullying.

Meara used Prezi, < http://prezi.com/about/> cloud-based presentation software that uses a single canvas instead of traditional individual slides. Prezi is distinguished by its zooming interface which enables users to zoom in and out of their presentation.
